Reported the fault to a data recovery expert. The drive does not click, and it is recognised in the bios. This means it could be firmware and may well be repairable.

There is an option within Outlook. When you choose "new message" or "reply" there is an "Option" button at the top of the email. Here you can put a tick in the box for Read and Delivery Receipt. You get an email back to say when it got there, and when it was read, BUT

(1) Some systems at the other end might not allow this to happen
(2) Some people, like me, turn off the facility

You cannot rely on it. Some email will fail, may go into spam folders, or there may be an issue at the client site etc etc. The only true way is to follow up your quotes with a phone call, or a make sure you get a response from the customer.

Hi Kerrie,

£35 per hour, for home computers only, in the Bristol area. I am sure our engineers can look into speeding up your PC and backing up 2Gb. Depending on how much data you have, including all your photos and iTunes, we may need to setup additonal backups possibly to a hard drive. Clifton is five minutes away from our offices.
